  • O.C. sheriff has rival's e-mails deleted
    Jack Anderson said the messages violated county law because they were sent to deputies' departmental accounts. His rival Hunt says the action was politically motivated.

    In yet another political skirmish within the Orange County Sheriff's Department, acting Sheriff Jack Anderson ordered his staff to delete an e-mail sent to hundreds of deputies inviting them to a fundraiser for Anderson's political rival, the department said Monday.



  • Gold thieves hit 11 JCPenney stores in California; haul is $2.5 million
    The break-ins have occurred over the last 18 months, the most recent in Laguna Hills. Two to four masked thieves break a display case and take jewelry.

    The first break-in took place in September 2006, when gold was selling for about $587 an ounce. The thieves lay low until last December before striking again, perhaps enticed by the price of gold hovering around $800 an ounce.



  • Grant for O.C. jail has string attached
    Orange must approve having state inmates at Theo Lacy for an expansion to proceed.

    Orange County has received preliminary approval from the state for a $100-million grant for the long-stalled expansion of the James A. Musick jail, but the money comes with conditions that could doom the deal.
